Sunday Masterclasses

Costume Design with Alexandra Byrne

Put simply, Alexandra Byrne is among the most exciting, in-demand costume designers in the world. Starting her career at the English National Opera, Alexandra became the industry’s leading light in period costuming, dressing the likes of Hamlet, Finding Neverland, and The Phantom of The Opera, while earning an Oscar for her work on Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Incredibly versatile, she has spent the last five years furnishing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from Thor to Avengers Assemble to Guardians of The Galaxy, turning pulp designs from the ‘60s into something modern and cool — her handiwork will next be seen around Benedict Cumberbatch’s shoulders in Doctor Strange. This is a unique chance to learn the tips of the trade from a master craftsman. Or if you just want to know how to pimp your jacket like Star Lord’s, that’s fine too.

Production Design with Eve Stewart

BAFTA Award winning production designer Eve Stewart has built worlds for both the King of England and Kermit the Frog. She has worked for directors such as Mike Leigh (including Secrets & Lies, Topsy Turvy and Vera Drake) and Tom Hooper, recreating ‘70s Leeds (The Damned Utd), ‘40s Buckingham Palace (The King’s Speech), 1820s Paris (Les Misérables) and 1920s Copenhagen (The Danish Girl), all with a fastidious eye for detail and flair for storytelling.
Away from historical drama, Stewart has designed the likes of Revolver, The Firm and Muppets Most Wanted. Next up is Gore Verbinski’s horror flick A Cure For Wellness and Paul McGuigan’s Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool. But before, then join us at Empire Live for a fascinating glimpse into the ways films are designed and crafted. A must for anyone interested in the art of filmmaking.

Composer Daniel Pemberton

A musician with more award-nominated credits to his name than we’ve had hot dinners, Daniel Pemberton has parlayed his composing skills into countless movies and TV projects, including Steve Jobs, The Counsellor, Cuban Fury, Peep Show and Guy Ritchie's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. He’s won an Ivor Novello and been nominated for BAFTAs and a Golden Globe, but surely none of those honours can match hosting his own composing masterclass at American Airlines Presents Empire Live. He’ll be there to answer questions on his work on everything from Ridley Scott’s first TV project, The Vatican, to his score for Steve Jobs to… well, come along and decide for yourself.

Cinematography with Anthony Dod Mantle & Seamus McGarvey

Empire Live is proud to present two of the most sought after cinematographers working today in conversation.

A pioneer in digital cinematography, Dod Mantle has done ground breaking work for the likes of Thomas Vinterberg and Lars von Trier, then brought his idiosyncratic eye to such diverse projects as Dredd, Rush and In The Heart Of The Sea. But it is with his collaborations with Danny Boyle on 28 Days Later, 127 Hours, Trance and Slumdog Millionaire, for which he won an Oscar, that have defined his raw, rough and ready energetic style.

Seamus McGarvey has brought his immense skills to the work of some of the most exciting filmmakers working today; Stephen Frears, Oliver Stone, Lynne Ramsay and Tom Ford. His four film collaborations with Joe Wright have delivered some of modern movies' most memorable images — the unforgettable tracking shot in Atonement, for example — plus, his work on blockbusters has brought finesse to big budget works such as Avengers Assemble and Godzilla.

These events take place in the Empire Hub on Sunday, 25 September.
